Celebrating Filipino Creativity and Craftsmanship: Alunsinag and Mara Pinon Shine at the Global Footwear Awards 2024

In a triumphant moment for Filipino artistry, two homegrown brands (Alunsinag and Mara Pinon) were honored at the 2024 Global Footwear Awards, a platform that celebrates innovation, craftsmanship, and creativity in the footwear industry. Both brands, nurtured under the guidance of Zapateria, have etched their names in history by not only showcasing exceptional design but also championing the soul of Filipino craftsmanship.

This achievement is more than an accolade; it is a testament to the dedication, artistry, and resilience of the designers and artisans who bring these creations to life, reminding us that each pair of shoes carries a story worth telling. It highlights the remarkable talent of the Filipino footwear industry but also underscores how creativity plays a vital role in empowering local artisans to reach a global audience.

A Rising Star - Alunsinag

Designers Lee Villanueva and Ritche Rodulfo are no strangers to competitions, both of whom first made waves during the Filipino Footwear Design Competition (FFDC), earning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Ritche’s talent was further recognized with the Artisanry Award and an apprenticeship scholarship at Zapateria. Through this scholarship program, both of them were able to be mentored of the shoemaking process and jumpstart their brand “Alunsinag”.

At the heart of Alunsinag’s identity is their debut collection which introduced Pya, a reimagining of the classic clog mule; that of which earned the prestigious Global Footwear Award 2024 for Women’s Fashion and Collaboration. What began as a simple request for a friend evolved into an iconic design known for its minimalist elegance and meticulous craftsmanship. The clogs reflect Lee and Ritche’s philosophy— blending traditional techniques with contemporary style. Pya is now more than just footwear but has also become proof of Alunsinag’s commitment to reshaping perceptions of Filipino design in the global market.

Fusing Art and Social Impact with "Tarsimoji"

The story continues with Mara Pinon, whose work goes beyond aesthetics to make a tangible impact on Filipino communities. Her journey is a testament to how creativity can serve as a tool for cultural preservation and social advocacy.

For Mara Pinon, artistry is inseparable from advocacy. Her brand won the remarkable Global Footwear Award for Social Impact for its commitment to blending playful creativity with meaningful cultural preservation. Mara’s flagship design, the Tarsimoji mule, pays homage to the Filipino tarsier. The cartoon-like tarsier design brings a touch of whimsy, but beneath the playful exterior lies a deeper purpose.

Crafted from indigenous Abaca fibers, the Tarsimoji mules support Filipino weavers and artisans, breathing life into traditional crafts while providing sustainable livelihoods. The mules are not only a testament to Mara's creative vision but also contribute to the preservation of traditional Filipino crafts. Mara’s work bridges the gap between heritage and innovation, creating pieces that are impactful as they are beautiful.

What began in 2019 at the ArteFino Festival, supported by Zapateria’s Collaboratory, has since grown into a globally recognized brand. The Tarsimoki mules have graced the wardrobes of celebrities and fashion enthusiasts, spreading the story of Filipino craftsmanship far and wide.

The Heartbeat for Filipino Craft

At the heart of these remarkable achievements is the steadfast support and collaborative spirit fostered by Zapateria, a creative hub dedicated to nurturing Filipino talent.

At the heart of these achievements is Zapateria, a creative hub and incubator that has nurtured a number of Filipino designers and artisans.
